Adobe Garamond is based off the typeface that a French printer from the sixteenth century created. His name was Claude Garamond and he passed away in 1561.

The typeface was inspired by drawings which they quickly became punch out pieces of metal shaped into the letters made by Claude for printing purposes.

Garamond has an interesting past as it has been lost and revived numerous times. Therefore there is not only one version of it out there but multiple versions.

Garamond typeface is known universally for being very versatile with its’ fonts. It is also one of the most eco-friendly typefaces to use as the typeface uses less ink due to it’s design.

History

The serif typeface was made in 1989 and was created by Robert Slimbach. Robert Granjon was his assistant and his designs ended up influencing the italics.

This typeface was revived in the 20th century as it became popular again. Not only was it revived, but it has been revived several times before then.

When Garamond had passed away, his punches were sent to several different foundries which then started the rise in people creating typefaces inspired by Garamond.

There are many different variations of garamond out there today of people creating typefaces inspired by Garamond. Claude Garamond would have been honored.

Adobe Garamond has beautiful and well crafted scooped serifs as well as soft rounded serifs. The typeface is strong however, it is not intimidating and overbearing.

Another great feature are the flag-shaped top-serifs.You can tell by the way the letters are that it was originally handwritten, but in a good way.

Uses

Adobe Garamond is generally used for printing purposes. It has been seen in the Harry Potter books, Dr. Seuss books, The Hunger Games books, and many more.

Garamond was used for the original Google logo, the Apple Think Different campaign, and the Abercrombie and Fitch logo. These are just some of the well known logos.

Whether you are a graphic designer or interested in design or even neither, you have probably come across the adobe garamond typeface a couple of times in your life. Adobe garamond was the original typeface used for the google logo. It is also frequently used in many books and novels for printing as the typeface is easy to read and is quite beautiful to look at. Even though the past of this type is a little hard to understand due to the many different revivals it has had, it is amazing to see what it has become today in the world of type.
