The Monotype Company

This studio was formed by Tolbert Lanston in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1887. Lanston was very well known for developing the Monotype machine. With this machine, he used a mechanical method to punch out metal types, like Rockwell, and then these types were put into a matrix for the printing press. Rockwell is a very universal typeface. The Rockwell family can be used in many situations, this great typeface took a very educated engineer/designer to create it. Rockwell was designed in 1934 by Frank Hinman Pierpont. Frank was a well known engineer who worked mostly in England developing the Monotype.

Rockwell Nova includes a family of light, light italic, regular, italic, bold, bold italic, extra bold, extra bold italic, condensed light, condensed light italic, condensed, condensed italic, condensed bold, condensed bold italic. It was released in 1934. It is composed of mostly straight lines, circles, and right angles. Each of these versions of Rockwell can create a totally different feeling. The light version of this type, like the one used within this paragraph, give off more of a casual/business vibe. In contrast, the bold versions of this type such as bold and extra bold, portray more of a display/modern look.

Rockwell is a typeface that can allude to so many meanings throughout the use of the different versions within the family. Rockwell is such a strong typeface that sympbolizes pyramids, structured buildings, and more. Rockwell was inspired by Litho Antique, which was an earlier, more condensed slab serif that was designed by the Inland Type Foundry in 1910. Rockwell Nova is based on the Monotype Rockwell suite of fonts and it supports up to 94 languages. Rockwell was influenced by a style of geometric slab serif like franklin gothic, futura, and akzidenz.

It can be used for blocks of text in print and for onscreen sites due to its duality amongst it's different fonts. Rockwell Nova has a very strong presence that is perfect for businesses and corporations.

This typeface has been used for many different well-known companies. Such as, the Guinness World Records, Expo 86, Docklands Light Railway, Malibu Rum, Hollywood Records, Tall Lighthouse, and more.
